Thousands pay last respects to Remonde in Cebu hometown

At least 5,000 people paid their last respects to the late Press Secretary Cerge Remonde in his hometown of Argao in Cebu province, before his burial on Sunday. Radio dzBB's Cebu affiliate reported several residents of Argao went to the President Diosdado Macapagal Sports Center where Remonde's remains were brought. Many of those who paid their last respects since Saturday were former classmates and teachers. Preparations were also made for President Gloria-Macapagal Arroyo, who was scheduled to fly to Cebu Sunday morning to attend a Requiem Mass (mass for the deceased) for Remonde. Remonde, who died of a heart attack Tuesday, was to be buried in a small family mausoleum at the local parish cemetery. His remains were brought to Cebu Friday, with a brief stopover at his ancestral home in Barangay Lamacan, then to the Malacañang sa Sugbu in Cebu City. The remains were then brought to the sports center for public viewing. On Friday night, many bigwigs in Cebu media heaped praise and admiration on Remonde. A Malacañang statement said the tribute from local media lasted three hours. Even former presidents Fidel Ramos and Joseph Estrada, went to the Malacañang sa Sugbo Friday night to condole with Remonde's widow Marit. - LBG, GMANews.TV
