NBI busts fake US dollar syndicate

An alleged Philippine syndicate selling fake US dollars was busted after government agents arrested its suspected leader in a sting operation in Pasay City last week. Jesus de Leon, 54, was arrested last Thursday while delivering 14 bundles of fake $100 bills, which could have been worth P6.4 million, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said. De Leon’s companion, 53-year-old Ernesto Pascual, was also placed under arrest in a follow-up operation, the NBI said. Both were arrested after the NBI acted on a tip and authorized an undercover team to pose as buyers who were offered 20 bundles of $100 bills. Each bundle was said to have 10 bills. When NBI agents met with de Leon at the Heritage Hotel in Pasay City last Thursday, de Leon was arrested after he handed over 14 bundles of fake dollars. Pascual was arrested in a follow-up operation that night. An initial check by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas found the bills to be counterfeit, the NBI said. The US Embassy took some samples to forward to the US Secret Service for further analysis. De Jesus and Pascual now face charges of illegal possession and use of false treasury or bank notes and other instruments of credit. - GMANews.TV
