SC spokesman appointed court administrator

(Updated 11:30 p.m.) The Supreme Court sitting en banc has unanimously appointed SC spokesman Jose Midas Marquez as the new court administrator. As court administrator, Marquez will enjoy the same rank, privileges, and compensation as that of the presiding justice of the Court of Appeals. He “I never thought of being a court administrator. I seriously considered retiring with Chief Justice Puno," said Marquez, who is concurrent spokesman of SC. "However, the opportunity presented itself. Friends, including other justices and officemates have convinced me to apply so I decided to go for it," he added. Before his promotion, Marquez was serving as deputy court administrator for the regions of Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Northern Mindanao. His new position is crucial in ensuring that the court is “functioning well," said Marquez. According to the SC website, the Office of the Court Administrator (OCA) is tasked with the supervision and administration of the lower courts and their personnel. “[The court administrator] is the link of justices, and court personnel to the SC… He is tasked to evaluate perceived cases of graft and corruption in the courts, as well as investigate delays in handing down decisions," Marquez said. Marquez, 43, is the youngest person to be appointed to the powerful position, besting eight other candidates for the post. He replaced former court administrator Jose Perez who was recently appointed as associate justice to the high tribunal. – Aie Balagtas See/JV, GMANews.TV
