Palace congratulates Pinoy math whiz kids


Malacañang on Monday congratulated the country’s delegates to the 2011 World Mathematics Team Championship (WMTC) held in Beijing, China. In a press statement, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said, “We extend our congratulations to our Pinoy math whiz kids and Miss Philippines for once again proving that we Filipinos are capable of competing against the best and the brightest on the world stage." Lacierda said Farrel Eldrian Wu, a Grade 6 student from Taguig, won a gold medal and ranked first in the primary division individual contests of the Mathematics Competition. Farrel was part of "Philippines Team 1" along with other elementary school students Clyde Wesley Ang, Miguel Lorenzo Ildesa, Andrea Jaba, Sedrick Scott Keh and John Aries Ceazar Hingan. The group placed second over-all in the team contest. World math contest The WMTC was a four-day event held from November 2 to November 6 in Beijing. The competition had three divisions:

  • Primary School Level (For participants born in November 2, 1999 or later)
  • Junior High School Level (For participants born in November 2, 1996 or later)
  • Senior High School Level (For participants born in November 2, 1993 or later) The teams were ranked by total scores and each of the top six scoring team members received a medal and a certificate. For the individual awards, in each division, the top 10% scorers received gold medals, the next 20% received silver medals, while the next 70% scorers received bronze medals.
