Auto maker introduces GPS driving gadget in RP

MANILA, Philippines - Driving with the assistance of GPS, or global positioning system, will now be available in the Philippines via German automaker BMW. The firm, in a statement, said its BMW Navigation System will come as a standard feature on all 3 Series models. Users input their destination on a 3.5-inch touch screen and the system will provide guidance via a pre-installed map that covers major thoroughfares in cities and municipalities in the Philippines. The navigation system can also issue voice directions - complete with street names - so drivers never have to take their eyes off the road. Those averse to being ordered around can limit their options to visual aids: the colored monitor is readable even under direct sunlight. BMW said map upgrades will be available at all authorized dealerships. The navigation system will also accept custom Points of Interest, allowing drivers to program preferred destinations and personalize their devices. Bluetooth wireless technology is integrated into the system, with a built-in microphone and speaker that can be paired with most mobile phones. An MP3 player can likewise be hooked up. Features extend to a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, and calculator. BMW says its Navigation System seamlessly integrates with the 3 Series’ modern interior. It is fitted on the dashboard, directly above the interior trim on the instrument panel, with a secure and specially developed cockpit mount. The system is also directly connected to the car’s power supply, which therefore charges the device while the vehicle is in operation. A battery allows owners to use the BMW Navigation System outside the car for four to six hours as a portable city map. - BusinessWorld
